How can you as the designer use principles of design to help compose a page? The principles of design can help a designer know where to place certain objects and items to appeal to the viewer on a primal level

What are the principles of design (define each in your own words)? Contrast, repetition, alignment, and proximity.

For each of the 4 principles of C.R.A.P., find an example that utilizes the principle within the design. You should have 4 DIFFERENT sample designs. For each, discuss how the particular principle is used.

Contrast: Very simple, this image helps to give a close look at the contrast with the different colors

Repetition: This simple repeat of squares gives a mind-altering feel that is both awing and disconcerting

Alignment: Having everything perfectly squared up gives the image a feeling of uniformity and righteousness as if it simply just should exist.

Proximity: The closeness of each object gives the image, as a whole, a feeling of cohesion and collective teamwork.

Video #3: Principles Of Design

Define principles of design?
Principles that make or break a design; contrast, repetition, proximity, and alignment.

What do the principles of design affect?
How people look and think of the design.

What is the difference between the principles of design and C.R.A.P.?
How can contrast help a design? Principles of design consist of C.R.A.P. It stands for contrast, repetition, alignment, and proximity. Contrast gives the design a focal point.

What is wrong with having too much or too little contrast in a design?
Too much contrast may confuse the audience as to what the focal point is. Too little contrast makes the design not have a focal point at all.

What is the key to working with contrast?
The key is to have a focal point.

What are some common ways of creating contrast?
A light color within a dark color of a dark color within a light color.

What is the principle of repetition?
It is repeating the same shape or design over and over again.

Describe ways that the principle of repetition helps the composition?
Repetition makes a cohesive piece.

What are ways that you can incorporate repetition into your designs?
Repeating the same shapes around the focal point.

What should you avoid when working with repetition?
You should avoid using too much repetition or weird repetitions.

What is the principle of alignment?
Everything has a visual relationship with the other principles on the design.

What is the principle of proximity?
Grouping shapes closer or farther apart.

What is the principle of proportion?
The size and proportion of a shape/design.

Define symmetrical balance?
Making the design equal and that one side of the design doesn't have more decorations than the other side.

What is another name for asymmetrical balance?
Informal balance.

Define asymmetrical balance?
Placement of objects that may not seem equal on the design but they are equal around the focal point.

What is a focal point and how is it created?
The center or the thing that pops out the most on a design. It's created with contrast; the focal point is different from the rest of the design and pops out more.

How many components of a composition can be a focal point? 3.

What ways can emphasis be created in a design?
It can be created using contrast or it can be created by using the other principles around it.

What is the principle of harmony and how is it different from unity?
Harmony is using the principles together to make a simple look. Unity makes the principles work together as a whole.

What is the principle of unity? What three ways can unity be obtained?
Unity is making sure that all the principles work together as a whole. It can be obtained with contrast, repetition, and alignment.

What is the principle of variety?
Making different designs and using different principles in one art piece.

What three ways can a designer add variety to a design?
Changing colors, focal point, repetition, and alignment.

Compare and contrast vector graphics and pixel images. Vector Graphics are more of an informational storage and so images can be expanded and contracted without loss of clarity while pixal images are more of a painted picture that can barely be adjusted

What resolution is necessary to print raster images?
300DPI
What resolution is necessary to display raster images on the internet?
72DPI

Why must designers pay close attention to how color is utilized within a composition? Color is vital to the life of a picture. If the color scheme is not compatible, then the final product will always be an eyesore for anyone viewing the image.

Why is the color wheel an important tool for graphic designers? The Color wheel lets designers have an easy to access tool that will enable them to be able to choose appropriate colors for any scene

Find an example of neutral colors utilized within a design (hint: google poster design). Near the sample, discuss why you feel the designer included neutral colors within the composition.

The color of the background is bland and there's nothing to look at so instead, viewers are drawn to the image ad the first block of text seen
Briefly describe how we "see" the color of an object? The light bouncing off and object would then bounce into our eyes were two sets of receptors will be in charge of receiving information in regards to color and shape.

Video #2: Color Theory

Describe white light? White light is light emitted that is a combination of all the colors of the spectrum. Usually, the light has a wavelength that combines all the other colors.

How do we see color if objects "have no color of their own"? The color is derived from the absorbing and reflecting of certain wavelengths. Colors that are absorbed are not seen while those that are reflected are seen.

What seven colors result when white light is refracted through a prism? Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo, and Violet

Describe hue? The hue is the purest form of the color

What happens with white? White is the combination of all the colors of the spectrum

What happens with black? Black is the absence of all light or color

How color is perceived depends on what? Whether the object will absorb or reflect the light

What is a color wheel? The organizing of colors in a structured format that relates each color with another

What are primary colors? Name them? The colors that cannot be made by combining any other colors. These colors are Red, Yellow, and Blue

What are secondary colors? Name them? Secondary Colors are a combination of the primary colors and they consist of Orange, Green, and Purple.

What are tertiary colors? Name them? They are a combination of the secondary colors and these are Red-Orange, Yellow-Orange, Red-Purple, Blue-Purple, Blue-Green, and Yellow-Green

What are neutral colors? How can they be created? Neutral colors are earth-toned colors that are not usually on the color wheel and can be created by mixing complementary colors.

How can a neutral color help a design? They can help rest the viewers eyes or lead them to a focal point.

What are complementary colors? Name them? Complementary colors are colors opposite on the color wheel. Yellow/Purple, Blue/Orange, Red/Green

What is color value? Color Value is the brightness of a color.

What is a shade? Shade is a darker hue of a certain color by mixing black.

What is saturation/intensity? Saturation/intensity is how pale or strong a color is. What happens when you mix complementary colors together? The resulting product is a neutral color.

What is a color scheme? A color scheme is the colors of colors in a design

Describe a monochromatic color scheme? A monochromatic color scheme is a color scheme that consists of tints and shades of one color.

Describe an analogous color scheme? An analogous color scheme is a color scheme of three colors next to each other on the color wheel

Describe a complementary color scheme? A complementary color scheme is a color scheme of colors opposite to one another on a color wheel.

Describe a split-complementary color scheme? A split-complementary color scheme is a color scheme in which one complementary color is omitted in the pair and colors of each side of it are used instead.

Describe a triadic color scheme? A triadic color scheme is one in which that colors on the color wheel form a triangle.

What colors are considered to be warm colors? Red, Orange, Yellow, Brown, and Tan

Describe the psychology of a warm color scheme? Makes the audience feel more comfortable.

What colors are considered to be cool colors? Blue, Green, Purple

Describe the psychology of a cool color scheme? Makes audience feel calm.

Why is important to consider which colors are being used within a design? Colors can help an image give of a certain mood.
